Read Our Primer on Popular Metals Found in Jewelry

  • Yellow gold - This is the classic deep yellow and dense metal found in jewelry from time immemorial. It is a natural element that cannot be manufactured and is considered very rare. Alloyed with other metals to preserve its color and strength, gold is measured in 10, 14, and 18 karats, while 24-karat gold is the pure thing.
  • White gold - An alloy of gold and at least one white metal, such as silver or palladium, white gold actually has a natural yellow undertone but is finished with rhodium plating to enhance its white color. The plating eventually wears off but it can be easily reapplied.
  • Platinum - White and heavy, platinum does not need any plating and is naturally nonallergenic because it contains no nickel. It costs three to five times as much as gold because it is much rarer and is used in its nearly pure form.
  • Palladium - When you are looking for an alternative to platinum and white gold, palladium is the answer. It stays white, costs about the same as 18-karat gold, and is part of the platinum (noble) group of metals.
  • Titanium - Considered one of the new millennium metals and 99% pure, titanium is lightweight, highly durable, and hypoallergenic. It has a gray luster.
  • Tungsten carbide - Also charcoal gray, tungsten carbide is processed with carbon, ground to a powder, and then compressed at high temperatures. You end up with a durable and scratch-resistant metal that maintains its polish and is nonallergenic.
  • Sterling silver - Another jewelry classic, sterling silver is an alloy made up of 92.5% silver and 7.5% of copper or another metal. Sterling has a minimum fineness of 925. In general, fine silver - that is silver that is 99.9% pure - is too soft for producing functional objects, which is why it is alloyed with other metals to give it strength while maintaining its malleability and beauty.

Let Us Inspect and Clean Your Jewelry for FREE

Generally, chlorines and bleaches are very bad for the precious metals in your jewelry. They affect the alloys, cause discoloration, and increase the porosity. Chlorines also remove rhodium plating and can even damage gems!
